History of the Murphy bed.

taken from

William L. Murphy applied for a patent for the Murphy bed on April 1, 1916 and was granted Design Patent D49,273 on June 27, 1916. Murphy started the Murphy Wall Bed Company and began production in San Francisco. In January 1990 the company changed its name to the "Murphy Bed Co. Inc."

These beds make appearances in movies, as they lend themselves to slapstick humor in which people are trapped when the bed folds into the upright position, carrying the person on the bed inside. For example, in Stanley Kramer's comedy It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, the smarmy Otto Meyer (Phil Silvers) gets thrown from the fire truck ladder, through a window and onto a Murphy bed, which promptly retracts into the wall. In Mel Brooks' Silent Movie, a hotel's neon sign advertises "Murphy Beds Charming to the Unsophisticated". Modern Murphy beds utilize a counterbalance system making it near impossible to get trapped.

In 1989 an appellate court held that the term "Murphy bed" is no longer entitled to trademark cover because a substantial majority of the public perceive the term as a generic term for a bed that folds into a wall, rather than the specific model made by the Murphy Bed Co.

What is Murphys Wall?

This is a site created from our sister site  By request we have simplified the Murphy bed buying process.  The main site may be overwhelming for customers with the number of custom options you can select.  Here we narrowed down for you.  The trim and features are selected for you for the different styles.  What you see is what you get.  You still get to choose the wood, color and size.  If you still want to get involved, go to the sister site: wwbeds

We are a company that started over 25 years ago in the garage of owner Gary Davis.  While building high end aircraft cabinets at Falcon Jet, he attempted to build a waterbed for his wife.  Each time when he just about had one completed, a neighbor would stop by to see what was going on, and would end up buying it.  To make a long story short, it took his wife more than a year to get her first waterbed.

That was then and this is now. The waterbed craze has come and gone.  Be we have not. We still sell and produce a large number of waterbeds, but  they are now only a small portion of our product line.  We are known for our Murphy Wall Beds now We have our own custom designed pieces and built anything from wooden trash cans to massive wall units, and we will build it out of anything from simple Southern Pine to Tamo Ash from Japan.

Because of our name, most people think that we only custom built waterbeds.  They are unaware how diversified we are and how much more that we do.  That is when we added Furniture Gallery to our name and added a whole new image to our business.  It is the customer that dares us to explore new techniques and expertise by challenging us to design and build their ideas.

 Warranty Information

We are so confident that our product will last that we will replace any part that fails due to craftsmanship for a period of 10 years.  We use only the highest quality lumber and building techniques.

Our mechanism also is guaranteed for 10 years. If you ever have a mechanism problem, just give us a call and we will send out any new part you need. After the warranty period expires, only minimal charges apply.
The bed has been tested for 10,000 revolutions without wear or tear (that's 27 years of everyday use).  The legs have been tested to 6000 psi with a factor of 2 (two legs).  There are very few moving parts on our Murphy bed.  We have never had to replace any part due to wear, break-down or craftsmanship.

As you've seen by shopping our competitors, our prices are well below even the closest one.  Our original strategy was to use the advertising money originally budgeted for the Murphy bed start up period and pass that on to the customer.  That has worked.  Our web site is moving up in the rankings and "word of mouth" is being spread.  We have customers buying their second bed, and customers prompting their neighbors to buy. For that, we thank you!
Pricing on this site includes shipping charges to most areas.  We try to make is as straight forward as possible.

The wall beds do break down to very manageable units, but are still too large for UPS.  We do ship on large freight lines to your front door.  You will be responsible for having help there to take it into the house.   We will ship to anywhere in the Continental United States for FREE.

Free shipping is for the 48 Contiguous states and excludes some parts of New York and Washington State.  For any out of the area please request a custom shipping quote.

What is custom furniture?  Back to FAQ  Back to Top

Custom furniture is any item that we have not built or designed before.  These can be items ranging from a simple end table to an elaborate bedroom suite.  With custom furniture you pick the size, color, style, wood choice, and hardware.  Some of the items may catch our attention and we will turn them into production items, but that doesn't mean that all pieces will be the same.  Each time I build one I will change something to improve its price, style, or the way it functions.

How long does it take to get something built? Back to FAQ  Back to Top

It depends on our current schedule.  Most of the time it takes 2-6 weeks.  The actually building of most projects takes a week or less to build.  The rest of the time is for scheduling the project.  Rush orders are available at an additional charge.  If you need a current lead time or a rush quote, let us know by using our quote form.  We have our Murphy Wall Beds geared up for production.  The current lead time is 3-4 weeks on most.  The Alpine may have a little shorter lead time.

What type of wood do you use?  Back to FAQ  Back to Top

In this simplified ordering process of this site we mainly use oak, maple.  Even though these are our most popular, we can use any species that you want.  We can even get exotic woods.  We have built desks out of Tamo Ash from Japan and Burl Walnut.  We are not limited to anything. See a few samples on our wood link.  If you are wanted a custom wood type, go to our sister site

How are items priced?  Back to FAQ  Back to Top

Each item is priced as shown including the crown and base, if required, and shipping to most places.  If you want something more customer you can check out our sister site email a quote form we will figure the cost of material, labor and, if needed, shipping.  This is a no obligation quote, and we will stand behind the quote for 15 days.  After that time the quote will have to be resubmitted to compensate for changes in costs.  Some items, unless noted in the quote or offer, are standard.  Such as, allowing $2.50 per drawer for hardware.  If you choose a higher priced pull, the difference is charged.  We will give you as much information as possible during the offer.  Items listed on our web site are priced as shown.  Minwax stains can be substituted at no additional charge.

What are your stock colors?  Back to FAQ  Back to Top

We use Minwax stains.  We do this because samples are available in most "Home Stores"  or from their web site,  The colored lacquers stocked include our baseball Blue and Green, Racecar Red, and Barbie Pink.

If a true sample is needed, contact us and we will send one out to you.

What about shipping?  Back to FAQ  Back to Top

On smaller items and even our baseball bed we use transport companies such as UPS or DHL.  The larger items require larger freight companies.  To keep the shipping cost down, we quote on an individual basis to your zip code.  This way we can compare prices from many companies.  UPS and DHL regularly ship to your front door.  Most of the time freight companies will not deliver to your door without an additional fee (usually $60-$100).  If needed we could arrange home delivery with an installation service (we are currently working on this).  When you send your quote form be sure to inform us of your delivery and shipping preference. IMPORTANT:  Upon delivery, be sure to inspect each box and note any damage before the shipping company leaves.

How can I check the status of my item?  Back to FAQ  Back to Top

You can check the status on the Status link. This is a page  I developed so that customers can see what stage their piece is in. We try to keep this as up-to-date as possible, but sometimes we get busy building.  Please feel free to email me if the date is not current and I will be glad to bring you up to date.  We also have a Current Projects link to show you exactly what we are working on each day.

Can you build a project from a picture?  Back to FAQ  Back to Top

We can, but due to copyright laws will not build it exactly as pictured.  If you like that furniture the way it is then we suggest that you purchase it directly from that source.  However if it is a picture of something in a design book, a friend's photo, or something similar to what you want, then we can use that picture.  We can also use pictures of furniture that you already have to get the style or theme.  Send any pictures that will be helpful in the design process to

Do you do drawings?  Back to FAQ  Back to Top

Yes, we do, but on quotes I usually will not send them, because of the time involved.  If you require one I could send a quick hand sketch to help with your decision.  On most cabinets, I can do a computer drawing and place it in a room setting.  For this service, we require a $60 down payment, which will be applied to the cost of your furniture.
